Supermarkets are squeezing the food supply chain too tightly, often forcing unfair prices on farmers, producers and the whole supply chain. These giant corporations are acting more like cartels; forcing unfair prices and practices on farmers, all while profiting from rising costs. Two of the 'big six' supermarkets didn't even pay corporation tax last year.
Today, I was pleased to co-sponsor the Ten Minute Rule Bill "Food products (market regulation and public procurement)", which aims to tackle this issue head-on. This bill aims to give more powers to the Groceries Code Adjudicator and create stronger coordination with the Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator, ensuring fairer practices, better public procurement for British food, and clearer labelling. It’s time to level the playing field and give our farmers the support they deserve.
Ten Minute Rule bills don't tend to make it far in our 'legislative process' - but its an important issue that I have been talking about a lot recently in parliament and in the press. Watch my speech about this very topic in the commons last week 👇
